Here we are, dear readers, it is that time of the year again. A month of intense fashion spectacle has finished with a quite spectacular Chanel show so we have all the latest and greatest from the beauty world, fresh from the runways of New York, London, Paris and Milan.
The current beauty trends fall into similar categories as last time – skin, pop of colour, strong lip, graphic liner, smokey eyes and glitter – however, the manifestation of these trends are quite different. To make it all a bit more palatable, I will split this topic into a few parts so I don’t overwhelm you with one massive post.
TREND 1: SKIN
It might sound silly to say that ‘skin is in’, because, frankly, when is good, glowing skin not in? But browsing through all the images from this season’s runway pictures, a large majority of designers opted for giving their models a super-glossy, flawless skin with minimal makeup using neutral and nude shades. As a makeup concept, it might not be exactly ground-breaking but I think it’s good to be reminded that if you have good skin, you can get away with very little, strategically placed makeup and still make an impact.
So prepare to spend most of your beauty budget on skin care this season and practice that perfect skin prep with a ‘barely there’ look, moreover, prepare to receive those compliments on your complexion. It’s one of my all-time favourite beauty strategies, it works all the time, not to talk about being time efficient too in the mornings.
Noon By Noor
This is one of the most beautiful examples of the leading trend. The secret is prepping the skin right to give that glow and use highlighters where needed. On the eyes, cheeks and lips you only need light touches of neutral shades well-blended and you are good to go.
The makeup designers injected a little colour in here with a tiny bit of blush, lip tint and neutral eyeshadow.
The queen of makeup artists, Val Garland did a lot of shows as usual and she designed quite a few skin-focused looks this season. The one at the Erdem show was one of the most beautiful ones with just the right amount of sheen on the skin paired with brushed up brows.
The ladies of Miu Miu looked similarly polished with only a subtle eyeliner.
Pat McGrath created this exquisite, ethereal skin look for Victoria Beckham using only a tinted lip balm and a soft wash of neutral colour over the eyes as an addition to the base and glowy cheeks.
Cushnie et Ochs
At Chushie et Ochs they went for a French Riviera feel and paired a glossy, bronzed skin with satin red lips. The result is looking elegant and lavish.
Glossy skin is the focus here with a touch of pale lilac over the eyes, pink on the cheek and lips but hardly detectable.
At Eli Saab, the models’ glossy skin was paired with soft matte eyes and lips.
All the models at Molly Goddard looked summery and healthy as if they spent a lot of time in the sun. Their glossy skin was paired with lots of bronzer blended over the face, the rest of the makeup was minimal courtesy of makeup artist Hiromi Ueda.
The natural skin trend had other versions appearing on the runways with less sheen and slightly less perfect-looking.
At Balmain, Val Garland has created a youthful, natural, satin-finish skin paired with Sam McKnight’s wet-look hairstyle with a deep side parting.
Yet another fresh look was created by Val Garland for Marant with the models wearing a laid-back hairstyle.
Lucia Pieroni has created an effortless makeup look with fresh skin and groomed brows.
Erin Parsons has created this soft natural look with boyish brows and taupe eyeshadow for Dion Lee.
Last but not least, there were a good few super laid back looks focusing on natural skin like the one at Alberta Ferretti, courtesy of the great Tom Pecheaux,
at Carolina Herrera,
and J. W. Anderson.
If you are looking at Instagram for inspiration, the best makeup artist doing the glossy skin is Katie Jane Hughes, check out her feed here. She is doing lots of IG lives too so you can learn a lot about how she preps the skin to achieve this particular look.
Goodness, this post is long enough already so will I finish up here, part two is coming up next week! See you then!
