NEW IN – Pixi Retinol Tonic first impressions

Long are the days gone when only hearing the word ‘tonic’ made our faces go tight, dry and burning! Lucky us, ‘tonic’ these days is less of a scary word and brands are continuously re-inventing this ever-confusing beauty category.

We all know that Pixi’s iconic Glow Tonic is a beauty cult product that has graced the bathroom shelves of beauty lovers worldwide for years, but recently the brand has upped its game by launching a hydrating Rose Tonic, followed by the genius Retinol Tonic. A retinol tonic sounds unconventional and strange at first but I think just as Dr Sam Bunting’s Flawless Cleanser we have another beauty game-changer at our hands here. And might I say what a way to keep a customer – you don’t have to buy your treatments from 5 different brands but you can get your core skincare routine from only one.

Traditionally retinol products can dry the skin, this is why they usually put them in a rich moisturizing, hydrating environment like a moisturiser. In this new Pixi formulation jasmine flower extract and glycerin will make sure that the skin will get enough hydration to counteract the drying effect of retinol furthermore it contains a big dose of antioxidants, peptides and soothing ingredients.  Instead of loading the tonic with quick acting, strong retinol, Pixi opted for a time-released encapsulated form of it which makes it more gentle than other traditional retinol products and it can be very helpful to people who feel they can’t really tolerate it. This tonic is a fantastic way to start your retinol journey or for people who don’t want to use strong formulations every day but still want to enjoy the benefits of retinol.

I’ve only had it for a week, so it is early days but let me share my first impressions with you:

What it is: multi-action treatment with encapsulated time release retinol and potent antioxidants.

What it does: improves skin texture – reduces fine lines, smooths complexion, firms skin, boosts collagen production, repairs and hydrates.

Who it is for: all skin types, retinol/anti-ageing newbies, ones who find it hard to handle stronger retinol formulations.

Packaging: appealing as all Pixi packaging, pretty lilac bottle, lightweight plastic, there’s an opening on top that drops out just the right amount of product.

How to use it: you can use it daily, am or pm, after cleansing. I personally would use it in the evening after cleansing followed by Pixi’s Rose Tonic and the rest of your routine. In the mornings I would go for the Glow Tonic after cleansing followed by the Rose Hydrating Tonic and the rest of your usual routine. Don’t forget about your SPF in the morning!

Ingredients:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Water, Glycerin, Propanediol, Methyl Gluceth-20, PEG-8, Panthenol, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Lecithin, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Flower Extract, Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis Flower Extract, Sodium Acrylates Copolymer, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-27, Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrin, Retinol, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower/Leaf Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Flower Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Fruit Extract, Sodium Citrate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Disodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Polysorbate 20, Ethylhexylglycerin.

How it worked for me: I’ve built this into my evening routine after cleansing on all the days when I don’t use my retinol serum and the 23% Vitamin C suspension from The Ordinary. As I mentioned, it’s still early days but I already love using this knowing I get a little hit of retinol every day. As you dispense it on the cotton wool you can feel a delicate lavender scent but luckily, it is not too overwhelming. The texture of the formula is quite silky, light and it feels cooling on the skin. After a week of use, I haven’t seen any irritation, redness or dry patches which is a great sign of how gentle the product is. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in venturing into the world of anti-ageing for the first time or wanted to but was a tiny bit apprehensive to try retinols for fear of irritation.

Value for money: excellent, you get 100ml for £10.00 and 200ml for £18.00 and they last for absolute ages. Well worth the investment.

Bonus Feature: Pixi products are 100% cruelty-free and have a lot of vegan options too, the Glow, Rose and Retinol Tonic are all vegan. (Big thank you to Tiffany for the speediest customer service reply! She literally got back to me within 10 minutes!)
