Yes, it’s that time of the year again! We have officially reached the height of the award season that kicked off with the Golden Globes last Sunday and the red carpets are filled with beauty inspiration once again. This year has proved to be a bit different from the rest since actors, actresses and celebrities decided to show solidarity with the #TimeIsUp movement and stand by the people affected by harassment at the workplace (and hopefully helping to end it) by wearing all black on the red carpet. Dress codes can be quite challenging, tricky, even limiting, standing out in a sea of black fabric is not easy so let’s see how the ladies of Hollywood and their beauty teams tackled it.
I think it’s safe to say, that red/berry lip ruled the red carpet, there were a good number of laid-back natural looks, smokey eyes were in minority this time. I have to say, I didn’t see a lot of play with colour when it comes to make-up which is a bit of a shame because when you wear all black you can practically get away with anything. However, actresses were a lot bolder when it came to accessories (earrings mostly), patterns of fabric and tailoring.
My favourite looks:
Millie Bobby Brown
Apart from having one of the coolest names in showbiz (together with Daisy Ridley and Taika Waititi) this girl might be only 13 but she is on the way to become a style icon. The talented actress wore a fabulous Calvin Klein dress with an intricate updo, fresh skin (obviously, she is so young) and a kick-ass black eyeliner courtesy of make-up artist Kelsey Deenihan. She looked like perfection top to toe, well done, Millie and team! She was my absolute favourite of the night.
Zoe looked stunning with her pixie cut and huge emerald Lorraine Schwartz earrings and despite opting for an old classic eyeliner flick-red lip combination she looked modern, laid-back and cool. Her make-up artist Lisa Storey used the new YSL Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain in Red Tribe.
The radiant looking actress brought real star quality to the red carpet wearing an understated Brandon Maxwell dress allowing her natural curls and a good few layering of Harry Winston diamond necklaces shine. The beautiful rusty red lip provided a much-needed pop of colour and Viola’s look was perfected with a chic manicure using “Seeing Stars,” a new nude Essie nail polish designed for black women.
It’s always a delight to see how Saoirse’s style keeps evolving year after year and I think this year she brought her best form to the Golden Globes red carpet. The 23-year-old Lady Bird star has let the sharply tailored beautiful Versace gown and Cartier earring do the talking and opted for a low-key, expertly blended makeup with a soft finish and a sleek updo. Make-up artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua used Chanel skincare and make-up on Soirsa featuring the new Poudre A Levres Lip Balm and Power Duo in Rosa Tempera.
There’s no denying this has been Clair Foy’s year. The Crown actress is enjoying a well-deserved success she garnered for herself playing Queen Elizabeth II. and on the red carpet, she never fails to wow us with her versatility. This time she made a statement with a perfectly tailored trouser suit by Stella McCartney accessorized with an “Actresses Equal Representation” badge on her sleeve. Her bold look was further emphasised by a bold red lip created make-up artist Georgie Eisdell, she used the shade Cerise by Chantecaille.
I refuse to believe that Halle Berry is 51 years old, it’s incredible how youthful she looks! Her look was all about the glow and a low-key make-up that complemented her relaxed hairstyle and short lace dress by Zuhair Murad. Her make-up artist Jorge Monroy used Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer to achieve that beautiful highlight and finished the look with combining Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Shine in Nuda and Silenzio on her lips.
Margo’s look was one of the most refined ones which, apart from a beautiful Gucci dress, was mostly down to the incredible lip creation by Pati Duproff that perfectly complemented her blonde beachy waves. Inspired by orchids and working with Chanel make-up she used three shades to achieve this heavenly look: Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Matte Lip Colour in La Romanesque 50, La Sensuelle 40 and the third one remains a mystery shade that wasn’t revealed by Pati at all.
Joining the actresses wearing emerald jewellery was Isabelle Huppert with this stunning Chopard chandelier piece pairing it with a ruffle-trimmed Chloé dress, a stunning red lip (unfortunately I couldn’t find any details of the shade she is wearing) and a modern, soft wavy bob. Teaching the young ‘uns a lesson in style the French actress definitely stood out from the crowd for all the good reasons: for being bold, cool yet sophisticated.
One of the few actresses braving colour was Kerry Washington courtesy make-up artist Carola Gonzalez. The pop of purple hue looked perfect with her loose waves and high slit Prabal dress. Carola had a good reason to chose purple: the colour represents loyalty, purpose and inserting steadfastness to a cause which complemented the Time is Up theme of the Golden Globes beautifully. She used Neutrogena make-up: the Hydro-Boost Hydrating Lip Shine in Soft Mulberry and the Nourishing Long Wear Eye Shadow + Built-in Primer in Cool Plum. How refreshing to see that even stars like Kerry are wearing a bit of drugstore too!
Everyone’s favourite Wonder Woman looked every inch of chic on the red carpet, her Tom Ford dress and tuxedo jacket were complemented by a timeless, classic make-up. Her make-up artist Sabrina Bedrani was responsible for this super-polished lashy look finished with a gorgeous Revlon burgundy lip shade called Bombshell Red.
Tracee Ellis Ross
Do you want to stand out on the red carpet? Wear a heavy black liner, matte red lip, pair it with a Marc Jacobs dress-turban combo and a pair of Irene Neuwirth gold and pearl earrings, job done! The lipstick Tracee is wearing is the limited edition Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Velvet Red in No. 2. with the precision lip liner in no. 98 Séduction.
I absolutely adore this lip shade on Jamie! I wish I knew the details of the make-up but sadly I couldn’t find it. Make-up artist Kira Nastrat did a fabulous job, I hope she will share later on. This deep red hue added a touch of ‘cool’ to the sleek hairstyle and leather accented dress.
Sporting a cool pixie cut (she shaved her hair for a role in the summer), Kate was positively glowing on the red carpet wearing a beautifully fresh makeup and a sheer skirted dress by Valentino. The black gown and the Harry Winston jewels went perfectly hand in hand with the subtle make-up and the vibrant, fun lip shade.
You could hardly take off your eyes of Jessica’s huge Piaget Limelight Rose Passion earrings but the make-up and hair are well-worth looking at too. Her vintage Hollywood inspired look was executed to perfection and that red shade of lipstick was mesmerizing! Make-up artist Tyron Machhausen used Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in 104 Passion saying he wanted to give Jessica “fierce fire engine red lips for a fierce woman,”
Would you need any other accessory than this glorious smile? Hardly. Maybe a nice sheer red lip but that’s pretty much it. America’s effortless, laid-back look was refreshing on the red carpet and went perfectly well with the custom Christian Siriano sequin gown styled with Stella Luna shoes. Sadly I couldn’t find any details of her make-up, I hope her beauty squad will share it later on.
Not everyone got it right for me. I wasn’t too keen on the looks of Mariah Carrey (too dated with a nose tip highlight Instagram stylee) Alicia Wikander (too plain and tad boring), Dakota Johnson (too plain and a tad boring), Alexis Bledel (a bit too ageing), Angelina Jolie (she looked a lot older than she actually is), even Emma Stone, who is one of my ultimate red carpet beauty crushes, didn’t get it right this time with all those cool tones.
